Every Pick 3 ticket comes down to one decision: do you need the digits in exact order, or do you just need the right three digits? That single choice changes your odds by a factor of three or six, and it changes the payout by roughly the same amount.
Straight: exact order
A straight bet wins only when your digits match the drawn digits in the exact position. There are 1,000 possible three-digit combinations (000 through 999), so a straight bet has 1 chance in 1,000. It pays the most because it asks the most.
Box: any order
A box bet wins when your digits match in any order. How good those odds are depends on the shape of your number:
- Six-way box (all three digits different, like 1-2-3): 6 of 1,000 combinations win — 1 in about 167.
- Three-way box (two digits the same, like 1-1-2): 3 of 1,000 combinations win — 1 in about 333.
- Triples (1-1-1) cannot be boxed — there is only one arrangement, so it is a straight bet by definition.
Straight/box and combo
A straight/box splits your wager between both bets: you collect a smaller straight prize if the order is exact, and a smaller box prize if it isn't. A combo buys every straight arrangement of your number separately — six tickets for a six-way number — so it costs six times as much but pays the full straight prize when it hits.
How to choose
- Playing one number a night on a small budget: box it. You will hit more often, which keeps the game going.
- Chasing a specific order you have a reason to believe in: straight.
- Want both without doubling the ticket: straight/box.
- Only care about the top prize and can afford the spread: combo.
